Pinole Creek Improvements

At last Tuesday’s City Council meeting, the Contra Costa County Flood Control District presented a proposal to improve the Pinole Creek channel, west of I-80. A few council members expressed frustration with the District, mostly due to the lack of communication between the City and the District, which was nonexistent until now.

The project would include widening the channel to better suit the flow demand of a 50-year flood (a flood event with the likelihood of occurring once every fifty years) and improving recreational aspects of the creek. Recreational improvements would include a better trail and a small boat launch (floating dock), as well as new trees and a nicer-looking channel overall.

Here is an image of a portion of the proposed plan…

One interesting item that came out of the District’s work is that the supposed city limits, which were assumed to be north of the creek, were recently found and confirmed to be south of the creek. That is, the entire westernmost reach of Pinole Creek lies completely within the City of Hercules.

The District is looking for funding for the plan, which exceeds $10 million in cost.
