Changes Sought for School Board Elections
— by Jeffrey Wisniewski — 29 February 2008 — Comments Off
A community group of residents are working to change the way board members of the West Contra Costa County Unified School District (WCCUSD) are elected. The group would like to make it that the board members must reside within a certain geographical area so that they can represent a certain number of schools within that area. Currently, the board members are elected at-large.
A map of proposed “districting” to create the proportionate representation has been submitted for consideration (Hercules schools would be a part of Area 1)…

The issue has been reported in the Contra Costa Times…
The school board has historically been top-heavy with El Cerrito residents, and [Anton] Jungherr [a member of the group] and others say that some residents, particularly those in Hercules, Pinole and El Sobrante, often feel as if they have no representation on the board.
There is a community meeting scheduled for this Sunday at 1:30pm at (for some reason I cannot understand) the Round Table Pizza in Pinole on Fitzgerald Drive.
More information on the plan is available on the DistrictGuide website.
