Transit Center Survey

The City will be effectively voting on the Szabo plan this Tuesday evening, and we would like to present to the Council, the opinions of the Waterfront community.
Background Information
The Anderson-Pacific plan is a new-urbanism walkable community approach. Some features include:
- Parking dispersed away from the Waterfront;
- A signature train station that will put Hercules on the map architecturally;
- A plan that is consistent with the “new urban” walkability of the Central Hercules Waterfront Plan; and
- A contiguous Bay Trail that preserves the natural beauty of the waterfront.
More information on Anderson-Pacific’s plan is available here.
The Szabo plan is a big box solution, similar to the Larkspur ferry landing and the El Cerrito del Norte BART station. The main purpose is to funnel in commuters and bring them as close to the transportation facilities as possible, and funnel them out again in the evening. Some features include:
- Replaces the signature train station for a smaller block style station, in favor of a massive parking garage and convention center on the waterfront;
- 4-lane roadway to the waterfront;
- Requires building a bus friendly commuter drop zone on the waterfront;
- Re-routes the location of the Bay Trail away from the waterfront and past the bus stop;
- Decreases the amount of retail and store front development; and
- Will require amending the waterfront historic district element of the general plan.
