Civic Arts Building Uproar

Question: If the Civic Arts Building is currently being restored and reconstructed as a restaurant, how is the intended use not already determined?

Resident Jaylene Watson brought this issue to the attention of the Planning Commission on March 3…

Ms. Watson, along with several other residents, then spoke out on this issue at the March 25 City Council meeting…

City Manager Nelson Oliva makes an astute point after the comments. He says that the Hercules Redevelopment Agency is an “independent body of government and functions independently of the City Council.” It should be noted however, that the redevelopment agency is entirely made up of the City Council.

Mayor Joanne Ward chimed in afterward, saying, “We are only at the beginning of a process.” We are at the beginning of a process, however, the reconstruction of the Civic Arts Building as a restaurant continues.
