A letter to the editor of the Contra Costa Times brings to light the upcoming budget for the Rodeo-Hercules Fire District

The people of Rodeo and Hercules should be aware that the fire district is in the process of finalizing its 2008-2009 budget.

It calls for an overall increase in wages and benefits of about 9.5 percent. Retirement contributions, which are fully funded, will increase from about $43,000 to $47,000 per year, per person.

Many people within the district would be very happy to earn that much in wages alone.

Fully funded health insurance for active employees and retirees and their spouses also will increase 9.5 percent.

Of the 2007-2008 budget of about $5 million, 84.3 percent is earmarked for wages and benefits.

The district will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday to discuss the 2008-2009 budget and at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17 to finalize and adopt the budget.

Meetings are held at the Rodeo firehouse.
