Times: West County students’ scores up, but still trail state

It is my personal opinion that the WCCUSD is too large a school district to cater to the students of Hercules. That being said, it is good to read that improvements have been made, but there is still a lot more to accomplish…

First the good news: West Contra Costa students continue to make steady progress in English and math comprehension, with several elementary schools gaining in the number of students found to be proficient or better in the subjects.

Now the bad news: Overall, the district lags behind the statewide average for students meeting the minimum standard on tests, with about a third scoring at or above the minimum level, according to 2008 state test data released this week.

The results for Ohlone Elementary, the school for the majority of (if not all) Waterfront children, according to the state website

  • 2nd Grade: 52% proficient or better in English, 50% in math;
  • 3rd Grade: 38% proficient or better in English, 47% in math;
  • 4th Grade: 58% proficient or better in English, 56% in math; and
  • 5th Grade: 56% proficient or better in English, 58% in math.
