Planning Commission Meeting Tomorrow

The only item on the agenda for tomorrow evening’s Planning Commission meeting — 7pm at City Hall — is the fate of Sala Thai and the restored historic Civic Arts Building. In July, the Commission rejected the restaurant as the building’s tenant, citing potential noise and smell offenses to neighboring residences, as well as the restaurant being contradictory to the building’s vision (as a museum, cafe, child care center, etc.), and the lack of process and resident input on the subject.
The Waterfront Now initiative — passed into law on July 22 — rewrote the zoning of the Civic Arts Building, and the Planning Commission tonight will hold a public hearing on rendering their previous denial moot, and directing the staff to proceed with the applicant’s submittal, which will no longer require public input or City review.
An hour-long public workshop will be held before the meeting — from 6 to 7pm — on the merged redevelopment area, which will now include Hilltown and Sycamore Crossing.
The complete agenda is available on the City’s website.
UPDATE — The City has announced that the public workshop will take place after the meeting, and not before.
