Site Work On John Muir Extension

Residents may have noticed that the power poles on the site of the future John Muir Parkway extension (north of Refugio Creek) have been removed, and that light stripping has been done. This work will allow for another round of wick drains to be installed through the fill since planned grades have changed (now with greater elevations) since the wick drains were previously installed several years ago.
Wick drains require time to take effect — at the minimum of 6 to 9 months — so construction of the John Muir Parkway extension will likely commence in 2010. (By that time, the Bayfront Bridge may be completed.) The work is not necessarily for the future roadway, but for the adjacent buildings that will be founded upon mat foundations (and not pile foundations), which require the underlying soil to be pre-consolidated prior to construction. Wick drains speed up the consolidation process.
