Waterfront Beat

There has been a lot of talk — but not a lot of action — concerning an active Waterfront neighborhood watch program. This blog originally started as an arm of a neighborhood watch, but eventually became a development news blog of-sorts. I am not an alarmist, and I do feel that blanket posting of crime issues — unless it is substantiated and reported on — is not beneficial to the community (at least through this blog), and is better-suited in closed form.

Introducing Waterfront Beat, an email group centered around crime-related issues in the Waterfront. (You must live or work in the Waterfront to be a member.) Feel free to sign-up below, and afterward, simply send an email to waterfront-beat@googlegroups.com to post to the group.

A neighborhood watch isn’t only about sending emails however. It is about doing something. It means calling the police when you suspect something is wrong. It means knowing your neighbors and their children. And hopefully Waterfront Beat will facilitate this.

Meetings will be held regularly (or semi-regularly) and a police officer will attend and update residents on recent crime activity in the area. The first meeting is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, April 19. Further updates will be posted exclusively to the Waterfront Beat email group (with a reminder posted on this blog every now and then).

If you are interested in keeping the Waterfront a safe place to live and work, please consider joining the group…

    Hi Jeff –

Can I get a little clarification on your comments about NOT posting crime issues to a blog/group that is about neighborhood watch? To be more specific, if a shooting occurred in our neighborhood, would you want that to be reported to this group so the rest of the neighbors could be aware? If people are getting held up in thier garages, would you want that posted here? I am just trying to understand the framework here and intent.

Or were you saying they should not be posted to “waterfront WATCH” but ARE appropriate for the new group “Waterfront Beat” ???

    Thanks,
    -Kathleen

@Anonymous – I feel that a closed-form group is better served for things of that nature. That is what Waterfront Beat will be. Please join Waterfront Beat and send that information to the group.

@Anonymous – You do not need a Google email account. You should still receive emails from the group, and you can send emails to the group (send them to waterfront-beat@googlegroups.com). (I think you need a Google account in order to go to the actual website and post, but it should not prevent you from posting via email with Yahoo, AOL, Comcast, etc.)
