Shoup In Santa Rosa; Hercules Next?

Donald Shoup, renowned parking guru, will be in Santa Rosa tomorrow to give a talk to the Santa Rosa City Council and Planning Commission on the future of that city’s downtown parking needs. (via Streetsblog)

Shoup needs to come and give a similar talk the City of Hercules, but the speaking fee is $3,000. I’m dedicating all future ad revenue to cover this fee, but based on current accrual rates, a ferry departing Hercules Point for San Francisco will come first.

A parking ordinance is in the works for the City of Hercules — sorely needed in the burgeoning more-dense Waterfront communities — and is based upon Shoup’s priorities: namely lower total number of spaces and higher curb-side parking rates (in part to encourage public transportation, or even walking), and the establishment of parking districts to keep the revenue in-place for pedestrian and streetscape improvements.

Unfortunately there is currently no political will on the City Council to move the parking ordinance forward, and the City and its residents lose as a result.
