Times: Hercules businesses owe city back rent

Tom Lochner reports… “Hercules Fitness and The Powder Keg Pub sublet their premises from the Hercules Redevelopment Agency, which rents them from private owners. Both businesses received more than the maximum amount under the agency’s Business Development Loan Program. As of Wednesday, Hercules Fitness owed the agency $206,484, equivalent to about eight months rent, records show. The Powder Keg Pub owed $15,600, equivalent to about four or five months rent, according to figures provided by Hercules Municipal Services Director John Stier.

I’d have to agree somewhat with the notion that the Powder Keg is a victim of the delayed realization of the Waterfront development. Then again, so are all of our homes’ values.

How about a positive approach…let’s go to the Powder Keg for dinner and to the Fitness Center for some exercise. Or, eat drink and be merry for the Holidays and then fulfill our New Year’s resolution and lose some weight. These local businesses will succeed only if local residents support them.
