Times Editorial: Contra Costa mayors must not reappoint Ed Balico to commission

— by Jeffrey Wisniewski — 5 January 2011 — 5 comments below »

Another scathing yet accurate and appropriate editorial from the Contra Costa Times editorial board:

Contra Costa mayors must not allow the fiscal and ethical irresponsibility plaguing Hercules to spread throughout the county.

On Thursday, they will consider reappointment of Hercules Mayor Ed Balico to the board of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, a critical agency that controls the purse strings for the county’s road and transit projects. The mayors must say no — they must send a message that nepotism and trading on political positions for personal gain is not acceptable in this county.

As we’ve said before, Balico should resign from his seat on the Hercules City Council or be recalled. And he certainly doesn’t deserve another term on the board of the most important transportation agency in Contra Costa.

Balico’s appointment would constitute an endorsement of unethical governance.

Another scathing Editorial but this one with links to the city mayors, which is helpful! It will be disappointing if he is selected now that the truth is coming out.

What was? Please specify. Red Barn receipts? Red Barn Contract? Balico’s connection to HMU? NEO’s conflict of interest? (certainly), Sycamore North? Selling the same property twice? The Field of Dreams? Hilltown? To what are you referring?

Balico is officially toxic. Seen as a liability by mayors across the region. Subject of a recall. It is a sad state of affairs and it is embarrassing for our citizens. But mr. Balico brought it on himself. If he steps down as mayor and embraces reform he might survive a recall. A public apology would be nice. Don’t hold your breath.
