Times: Hercules developer’s bills on hold

Tom Lochner reports… “Former interim City Manager Charlie Long, in a Nov. 30 letter to [Red Barn President Tom] Weigel, said that during a Nov. 17 meeting with Hercules Municipal Services Director John Stier, Weigel had ‘confirmed that the entitled [New Town Center] project could not be built due to market conditions.’ Weigel later told Bay Area News Group that the project could be built as planned ‘under the right circumstances.’ Olson’s letter notes that the project needs an infusion of tax increments to go forward, given current market conditions.

That Charlie Long sure did a lot of things right. I wonder why the council fired him.

In a previous report by Lochner, the project is described as follows: “Hercules New Town Center is a mixed-use project on 35 acres that is supposed to attract more than $500 million in private investment and generate between $100 million and $200 million in tax revenues over 20 years for the city, according to Red Barn. The three phases of the project — Market Town, Cinema Town and Transit Town — combined would comprise about 1,300 homes, almost 200,000 square feet of offices, almost 400,000 square feet of retail space, a 12-screen movie theater, and plazas and squares.

Just as Long recommended!!! And lest we forget, Balico was incensed at the thought his friends at Red Barn wouldn’t be paid! Long sure did a lot right for a fellow who was fired!
