Times: Hercules councilman lashes out at recall campaign

— by Jeffrey Wisniewski — 2 February 2011 — 9 comments below »

Tom Lochner reports… “Hercules Councilman Don Kuehne is lashing out at a campaign by residents seeking to recall him, suggesting it is funded by a developer that has accused the city of delaying its waterfront project. ‘While this appeared to be a grassroots effort, there is growing evidence that the waterfront developer and a high-profile political consultant have joined the cause,’ Kuehne wrote in a statement that he sent to an e-mail group on Monday. ‘Who is providing the ‘big money’ for this campaign?’ he continued.

The evidence must be damning. (There is none.)

This is amazing! And its insulting. Apparently Kuehne doesn’t think the citizens of Hercules are competent to handle a recall by ourselves! Not only are the allegations false but if he keeps going this way Kuehne may find himself in some legal trouble, in my opinion. When you lie in print, its called libel. A parent of a music student at Hercules Middle High spoke to me while we were in front of Lucky’s yesterday. She was outraged. Apparently Kuehne is emailing the parents of music students to promote his allegations. This is an abuse of power. Parents and students have nothing to do with the Recall. I hope the parent complains to the Principal as this is totally inappropriate. In the meantime, we are continuing to collect signatures and donations!

Mr. Kuehne and Ms Raines weave an alternate reality, where truth is what they say it is.
Reminds me of our own little “Bizarro World” … any of you who read Superman comic books as a kid will know what I mean.

The claim that the recall effort is receiving “big money” support and the involvement of a” high-profile political consultant” is a fiction. WHERE IS THIS “GROWING EVIDENCE” MR. KUEHNE?

We’d like to see that evidence.

Folks, this is just Kuehne and Raines making stuff up. It shows how much they underestimate the intelligence of the people they were elected to serve. That they don’t believe such an effort is possible without outside money shows how little they appreciate the fortitude and resolve of Herculeans, who have come together and, as a community, pitched in to solve the crisis resulting from mismanagement and corruption at city hall.

We should treat as fiction also the claim by Kuehne that he was a “lone voice” against Oliva. The facts suggest otherwise; Kuehne voted to bring Oliva back. He knows damn well he didn’t have to go along with that. Even if there were grounds for removing Long, the council could have appointed Warmerdam or Deltorchio in the interim. Bringing Oliva back and rewarding him with a golden parachute was the single most idiotic, bone headed, ill conceived and insulting thing they could have done. THE EVIDENCE OF HIS COLOSSAL MISMANAGEMENT WAS KNOWN when they cast that vote. And yes, they did it, by a UNANIMOUS vote. Nothing they say now will ever alter that reality. It will forever be the legacy of McDonald, Valstad, Balico, Kuehne and Ward.

We should also treat as fiction any claims by Raines that she “didn’t know” of the shenanigans going on while she was on the council. She makes a big deal of being “lied to” by other city officials. Yet she has no problem spreading a completely made up story when it suits her. By spreading this fiction about “big money” backing of the recall effort, she has destroyed her own credibility. I for one will never believe anything she says.

At least Joanne Ward hasn’t tried to blame everyone else. It may be too late for her, but at least she is not spreading lies to try to deflect criticism. Good for you, Ms. Ward.

At one time I hoped Kuehne would work for change. Now I realize he has been a big part of the problem.

    I signed the recall petitions.
    Have you?

I can understand how Don Kuehne has reach the conclusion about “Big Money”. After all it has been less than two weeks since the recall started and it is already close to being complete. Usually something like this takes months even with “Big Money”. But for the recall to be moving along so well in this short period of time might lead anyone to the same conclusion.

Unfortunately what Mr. Kuehne has failed to consider in his calculation is just how wide spread the community concern is. He has failed to see that it is not just the waterfront, it is the entire city. It is not “Big Money”. It is concerned citizens. It is citizens paying for the recall effort. Even more important it is citizens signing the recall petitions.

Please consider helping cover the cost of the recall. Go to http://www.HerculesRecall.com and make a small donation. Every little bit will help.

    Well said Phil.

As you said, the entire city is motivated to get a brand new Council. 2 weeks later and so many signatures already… It’s absolutely unreal.
    Big money? No!
    Well organized recall campaign? Yes!
    Upset residents? Yes!
    Waterfront only? No!
    All precincts? Yes!

I am glad to see Jim Anderson speaking up to reassure everyone that he has not funded the recall. I do not think that there would have been anything wrong with such a contribution, and I judge that Kuehne’s accusations would have been irresponsible one way or the other, since he had no evidence to back up his claims. Nonetheless, this underscores the desperation, irresponsible behavior, and poor judgment of Kuehne. He must go.

It is so typical tactic of politicians these day who make unfounded statements and force the public to prove them wrong raising doubt among the constituency. This is the same tactic that was used against the US Chamber of Commerce a few months ago claiming they were supported by foreign interests. Make some off the wall statement and make them prove it false. Mr. Kuehne you lack the integrity and competence to serve in any public office. Making unfounded claims is despicable and is further proof of your lack of integrity.

Every time Don Kuehne say or does something stupid, I will contribute $50 more to the Recall! Would anyone else like to join me?

There was a great editorial in both the Contra Costa Times and the West County Times today. You can see it on the website herculesrecall.com. You can also donate there too!!!! AND, if by some chance, you have yet to sign a petition, we are all over the City and there will be a station set up at City Hall tomorrow from 8 am to 6 pm. Look for a car decorated with balloons, signs and volunteers with lots of petitions!

@Anonymous: I’d contribute to the Recall but I’m not sure if I want to take you up on your challenge….I might go broke! 8)
