Hair Salon to Open on Railroad Avenue

The Planning Commission will hear a request to operate a hair salon business at 2138 Railroad Avenue at Monday evening’s meeting. I believe it is safe to assume the commission will recommend approval. Of course, that does assume the commission won’t be preoccupied as usual by the traffic and parking impacts, both of which must be considered strictly in terms of the surrounding New Urbanism development, and not within the typical suburban mindset.

The very positive takeaway is that businesses are still interested in the city. It is an encouraging sign that a recovery is possible. The City must ensure a business-friendly environment exists — where individuals are willing to take risks, although it won’t be easy with the struggling economy and political turmoil — and a bustling waterfront business district is integral to that reality.

I have met Hiedi and Ashley nice gals with a vision for their business and our community. Their positive energy is contagious. They are already becoming active in the community by beco$ing members of Rotary international and joining the chamber. This business will be a great addition to the waterfront. I plan to patronize them and so do my friends.

Is the city going to pay-the-way for them as Hercules Fitness and Powder Keg, or will they do it he old fashion way, and build there on business. As a tax payer, I’m not a bit interested using anymore tax dollors subsidize a new business?

Let’s not forget the money (1.7 million) the city poured into the Civic Arts Building.
